Camera Critters~ Peacock Park

Camera Critters

Last weekend Sugar Bear and I were accompanied by a dear friend of mine, who recently retired from my place of work, to a fairly local Wild Game Park. It was a lovely morning for a visit with the animals. We thoroughly enjoyed leading following Sugar around the park. Her excitement was infectious, and it almost helped us adults forget the sadness that usually consumes us when viewing animals in cages. For the next few Sunday's my Camera Critters posts will feature different animals from the park that day. I look forward to sharing with you a few of the special moments of the day.

This first set of photographs feature the animal of the day. The Peacock. There were so many peacocks freely wandering this place we jokingly called it Peacock Park. Sugar Bear was enamored by these creatures. Who wouldn't be? How incredibly beautiful is this?

Each time we rounded a corner and came across a male peacock, he would proudly display his feathers. The striking tail feathers stood much higher than Sugar, and I am quite certain it was a bit extraordinary from her perspective.

As a young toddler, Sugar had a small fear of three peacock feathers displayed in her Aunt Amy's bedroom. She did not like them one bit. She would hide behind my leg, and say, "I no like peacock!" This memory had me a bit worried when the very first animal to greet us to the park was a peacock, but I guess time eased her fears. She was completely taken with the amazing colors.

When looking at the full body of this bird, it really makes me wonder what the purpose of all the colors are. Any ideas why the wings are starkly different then the rest of the bird?

As much as I love the tail feathers, I have to say one of the most interesting parts of these handsome fellows is the cute little crest on the top of his head. It makes me giggle actually. It reminds me of those great hats you see women wearing to the horse races. You know....like the ones in "My Fair Lady". Or maybe more fittingly....a Vegas Show Girl.

This post wouldn't be complete unless I mentioned how incredibly noisy these birds can be. The entire time we were at the park, you could hear at least one peacock making a horrible racket. Sugar and I thought is sounded an awful lot like a small child yelling, "HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP!" This was a bit disconcerting, but I was able to convince Sugar Bear that no one needed help. Unfortunately, towards the end of our visit we found the source of the nerve racking squawking and I do think.....maybe....just possibly......he was calling for help. Recently he noticed that he misplaced his pretty colors. Poor fellow!

See you next Sunday, as the story continues.

What a gorgeous series of Peacock photos you’ve shared today!!! They’re all just lovely, but the white bird is a huge surprise ;--)

I could use some ‘gopher’ advice if you (or others) have any … but the main event in my Camera Critters this week (at Small Reflections) is Molly meeting a ‘look-alike’ last weekend … named Molly!
Hugs and blessings,

Sheesh, I wanna see a peacock!!! Wah...
I can never see them here... we just don't have farms or zoos that have them... or at least not that I know of... I'll have to check around...
Great photos, Corey... love the colors.

I have to say, this is "a bit extraordinary" from any perspective. What gorgeous creatures, and you captured them well.

It must be hard being an albino peacock and seeing the incredible colors the other peacocks have. No wonder he was calling for help.

Wonderful shots Corey. Their colors are striking. My dad recently got two peahens and a peacock. The poor male doesn't have any of those beautiful tail feathers though, something attacked him and got them all!
I'm so glad Sugar had fun and wasn't scared by all those "eyes" LOL

They are stunning and your photos are gorgeous as usual. I never thought before about how weird such things might be from Miss E or M's perspective. I must remember that and get down to their level more and look around. :D

Corey: Very well done on this beautiful bird. Peacocks are such a showy animal.

Spectacular shots! I really like the white one. And the close-up is pretty cool... I don't know if I ever really noticed the crest before.

Gorgeous shots. The blue is so vibrant in some it almost doesn't look real. Peacocks are amazing aren't they?? And yes, peacocks are REALLY loud. Suprisingly loud. Fun post. You've inspired me to post some camera critters of my own this week. Thanks always!

wow!!!

you should totally come over to cardiff castle. TONS of peacocks.

okay there are five. five = tons.

oh! i will make it so! i have me a corey fairy! mu hu ha ha ha ha !!

Corey that is wonderful. We have tons of peacocks around too - loads of farms and they always seem to have at least one.
The colours are all to do with attracting the female. Like most birds, the male is the most colourful adn beautiful. The peahen is quite dull in comparison (brown usually).

The shots you have taken are really really fantastic and show the feathers and colouyrs perfectly. I love the way you write too - that last one made me smile and gasp! A real rarity - an albino?
Great post. Glad sugar enjoyed it. I WILL try to get over more often....

ABsolutely gorgeous peacocks! And I've never seen a white one - an albino? :)

Incredible shots! And I think the tail feathers are simply for attracting the female of the species, if my info is correct.

Those are, again, incredible pictures!

I can't wait until we get to the zoo this year! I wasn't into photography last year (and I didn't own my amazing Nikon) so this year will be so much fun!!!!

Gorgeous shots, Corey! And I agree -- they really do sound an awful lot like someone shrieking for help. :D

CMB said...

They sure are pretty, but I am SO afraid! Birds totally freak me out.

Up where we live there is an area where the peacocks roam free. I heard that someone once imported them and now they've taken up permanent residence. And at times it's pretty noisy!!

Very coool shots!

I don't think I've ever seen such amazing pictures of peacocks!
