Back in August, some friends asked me to photograph their 9 week old Daughter. They live 6 hours away, but were planning a trip here to see family. We had a small window of time at a park that I have only been to once. I went into it feeling very anxious. I had 5 minutes to scope the place out for lighting issues, and then jumped in feet first.
I don't often get the chance to photograph babies. In fact, the last time I photographed a 9 week old, it was Sugar Bear, and I had no clue what I was doing with my little 4 MP point and shoot.
I fumbled around for a bit, and baby girl wasn't sure she liked my basket, but I managed to snag some decent shots, before she insisted on a mama break.
After a change of clothes, the little honey proceeded to seriously inspect her surroundings.
Her fun outfit did nothing to lift her spirits.
Our next tactic was to go directly to her heart....you know....through her tummy. After a little feeding, we stripped that little honey, and plopped her back in the basket.
She was much more content, and showed her joy by flailing her arms about...
and chewing on her fists.
What sort of infant would she be if she gave in to our plan, and didn't insist on some more love from mama?
Love and adoration.
Hugs and Kisses.
Daddy couldn't let Mama hog all the limelight, so he stepped in to lend a hand...or two.
I had something altogether different planned for the next few shots, but somehow, I wasn't able to deliver. If you look hard enough, you can see both Mom and Dad's hands supporting her head in these.
They oooooooo'd and awwwwww'd and proceeded to completely smother her with utterances of love.
And she reciprocated. Awwwwww...look at that smile.
All that loving makes a girl hungry, so after another quick nursing, Mama put her in one last outfit, and we struggled to get a few last shots while her tolerance was waning.
I felt so honored to be given a chance to help them capture this moment in time for them. This time that will be fleeting. This time to cherish. It is obvious that they adore every inch of this little bundle of baby fat, and who can blame them? Look at that arm....have you seen such scrumptious rolls?
To be honest, I wanted a do over on this shoot. I know I can be overly critical of myself, but I know I could have done better. I see so many silly mistakes, and wish I could have another chance, but the truth is....babies change from day to day, she will never be as she was that day. It is what it is...and despite my errors she is beautiful.
29 Live It or Love It:
What wonderful shots to have of a baby...mine all have dirty faces and icky backgrounds. No thought was put into them, and I can't get the moments back. Your friends were lucky to have you.
They just kept getting better and better. All of the ones with her clothes off are my favorites!!!! Don't you just love takign photos of kids?! They are truly my favorite subject!
I know you always will, but my reaction is "What errors?"
They are beautiful shots. If you did those for my baby I would hug you to death! They are so natural, just wonderful.
Corey, she is adorable and you captured her beautifully. I'm sure her mummy and daddy will treasure those shots forever.
Those are beautiful!
Well done! I love the yawn!
Great job, Corey! What a beautiful little girl!
What sweet photos. I absolutely 'heart' baby photos. The yawn is priceless.
Don't be so hard on yourself! Those are wonderful shots. I love the one where she is yawning. So precious.
Gorgeous photos of a beautiful baby! Good work!
Oh, Corey, you are way too critical of your work. These are gorgeous!
I think they are beautiful. Much better than anything I have of my first born.
I am sure the parents will treasure them.
What an adorable chubbers!!
What a fab job you did!! I love the last lot of basket shots in BW!
awwwww! How sweet, it makes me want to have another baby! I love the chubby arms...!!!
Gorgeous pictures! My favorite is the one where she's yawning. I love baby yawns. You did a beautiful job.
Those shots are adorable! You will always be your own worst critic. Ease up, you did a great job!
I think those are beautiful! She is adorable and so are the pictures, you did a great job.
Oh how I miss those baby days. They do grow up too fast.
Those are photos they'll always treasure! How wonderful of you to do it for them!
Definitely overly critical of yourself Corey!! They are wonderful shots - I wish I has shots of Nate at that age that were half as nice!
awww...such a sweet angel!
They look great to me! Then again, I am a photog. beginner;) Cute baby:)
What adorable pudgy infant cuteness you captured in your pictures. That photo shoot went super well. Very precious.
Ooooh, these are beautiful Corey - she is a living doll!
But I do know what you mean I think we tend to be a bit over-critical at times (which is both good and bad). :)
Oh, I'm so glad you (finally! ;o) ) posted these! She is a perfect doll, and these are lovely shots. I know you will always be critical and see only the errors...but everyone else sees only a sweet angel baby and nearly perfect images. What a treasure for mom and dad!
They're gorgeous! You may be able to see mistakes (I can always see them GLARINGLY in my own stuff) but I (and the parents, assuredly) just see beautiful photos of an extremely cute little girl! Way to go you!
Those are so much more special than pictures they would've gotten at a portrait studio - even if they didn't turn out exactly as you'd like, they are so creative and show off exactly how sweet that little baby girl is.
And by the way, what errors? :)
They are simply adorable. I don't think you need a do-over. I know that when I create something I see the flaws first.
So great that you got such a nice smile from the baby.
Oh you are being too critical of yourself! All of those pictures came out beautifully and if I were her mom I would blow them all up! I wish we lived near you because I'd have loved for you to take baby pics of Lucas!
