Camera Critters~ A Visit With An Earth Worm

Camera Critters

As a young girl, I was very fond of earth worms. I'm unsure when, why, or how this little affection began, but by the time I was seven years of age, I had my own small homemade worm farm. As I recall it, I had taken my large dump truck and filled it with dirt. I then proceeded to dig up as many worms as I could find. The many years between then and now has faded the exact memory of just how many I had, and how long I had them, but I still recall spending hours visiting with my little worm friends.

At one point I recall trying to distinguish each one from another so that I could successfully name them. Unbelievably, I attempted marking them with different colored nail polishes. The crazy part of my memory tells me it worked, but the realistic part of me now wonders how???????? Regardless of the truth, I think it speaks volumes of my affection for these little creatures.

No matter the number of years that have crept between seven year old Corey and Mama Corey, nothing can force me to forget how it all ended, and how devastated I was. One summer day, I headed out around the side of the garage to visit my little worm friends, only to find my dump truck over turned, and all the worms gone. Desperately, I looked around for them, but they were simply gone. Living in the country, you might assume that I would have suspected an animal to be the culprit, but this wise young lady had a more sinister inkling of who was to blame.

With tear stained cheeks I ran to the house, and asked of my mother, "Where is Casey? (my older brother)" and much to my dismay her reply still rings in my ears, "Oh, He and Mike went FISHING."

I am unsure if my brother ever got in trouble for what he had done, or not? I do know I never set up a worm farm again, as I was not going to make it easy for my brother to kill them. If he wanted worms for his fishing, he'd have to dig them himself.

As an adult, I don't often think of worms, and interestingly enough I rarely recall seeing them around my current house. It wasn't until last month Sugar Bear had ever seen a worm. I was grateful that I had my camera by my side when the cousins discovered a worm in Grandma's yard. It was a joy to see Sugar Bears delight in meeting her first worm. We just may have to make a worm farm. I know she'd love it.

What lovely photos!!
Sugar Bear seems to like all creatures, so a worm farm seems right up her alley!

Sorry. I can't even look at this one. I don't do worms. ;-)

You see, ever since I read Roald Dahl's 'The Twits' as a kid, worms make me shudder. Something to do with the worms in the spaghetti I think, ughhh, but when we dug up some brambles in our garden the other week I was happy to see lots of worms. That means our soil is ok doesn't it?
So sorry about your worm farm though hon. Brothers can be so mean.

Lovely shots, Corey. When my kids were really little, we'd always garden together and they all learnt from me that worms are a sign of healthy soil.

Fantastic photos! Teach 'em young because it's crazy when I'm out there fishing and the screams I will hear from children in the woods, "WHAT! I'm not touching that worm!! YOU MEAN I GOTTA PUT THAT WORM ON THE HOOK!?? EWW..." You should take her fishing! I think she would have a blast. Children as young as 2 are starting up! =)
Have a nice day!

Great pics!! I remember digging up worms as a kid. But I don't think I actually played with them.

I think Michelle's idea is great! Take her fishing!

I used to hold them when I was very young.. but now? Ewwwww! ;)

My DIL will go "save" the worms that crawl out to the sidewalks after it rains.

I really loved your story about the earth worms... how devastating! i too had some fascination with them, not a love like yours but still found them oddly intersting and loved the idea that they did wonderful things to the soil!

Emma has a similar love of worms right now. She leaves them in a little pile on the doorstep and is always confused why they aren't there the next day!

Great shots! You are a wonderful mother who teaches her daughter to love and respect the nature! I grew up in a big town (Istanbul), my mother was giving extreme attention to the hygiene and cleanliness and had strictly prohibited us to play with animals, so -you won't believe it but it's true- I even did not touch a cat or a dog until I was 34 years old, until when I had my first dog Sheker! And when my mother first took Sheker in her arms she cried of love and joy and said "Why did I wait 65 years to touch an animal?". Now she's crazy of dogs and cats! And maybe one day she'll also like worms! :-)

Yikes! That is a huge worm! But a great closeup!

Only you, Corey, could make an earthworm look almost pretty. Bean loves them too, but to actually touch one myself would make me shudder. *SHUDDER*

That is a marvelous story of childhood and how things define what we do from when we are young. Your photos are so clear and stunning.

while I can't say that I have ever been a fan of worms those are amazing shots!

Do you have a compost pile? I have a friend who added those to her pile with great results!

Wonderful, how open to exploration children are! They also have an instinctive sense for what is beautiful. Wonderful pictures, Corey!
Thanks to David,
for sending me over here again. :-)
