Camera Critters~ Fearless Friends

Camera Critters

Last Sunday, I introduced you all to a little snake we ran across while we were camping last July. After I captured a few shots of the little guy, Hubby picked him up to get a closer look.

Sugar Bear was very curious, and after watching Hubby hold the snake for awhile, she asked if she could hold him too. After a brief discussion with Hubby over what type of snake it was, he handed it over to the VERY excited Sugar.

Despite the harsh sunlight issues, the following photos depict some of my favorite summer memories. As I discussed last week, as a young girl I had no fear of reptiles either, so seeing Sugar joyfully experiencing nature yet again, blessed my heart.

As you can see, Daisy Dog had quite a bit of interest in the little snake as well.
Oddly enough, my biggest concern at the time was worrying over whether Daisy would agitate the snake.

July1108_0081ew

Sugar Bear thoroughly inspected this little fellow, and kept exclaiming over how it would wrap around her fingers.

July1108_0084ew

She was fascinated by his red tongue.

July1108_0089ew

And wanted a closer look.

July1108_0092ew

After a discussion regarding how to gently cradle the snake, as to not hurt him, she went about exploration.

July1108_0096ew

Only to briefly forget what I had just told her.

July1108_0097ew

I have to say, this little reptile was a good sport.

July1108_0102ew

He endured these small little hands in fairly good spirits.

July1108_0113e'w

Maybe the joy that spread through her being made it worth the torture for him...

July1108_0105ew

She wanted him to crawl on her arm...

July1108_0109ew

And give him a little hug!

July1108_0116ew

She would have gladly taken him home if given half a chance.

July1108_0117ew

Unfortunately the Mama thought he best be on his way back to HIS home after 15 straight minutes of Sugar Bear admiration.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether you encourage your child/children to be open and curious about nature regardless of your own fears or dislikes. Please share.

Thank you for coming by my blog this weekend. I hope to visit many of yours. Have a great Day!

What a tiny snake! I think it's great that you let her touch them, my kids get to do that at school... I don't do camping so we rarely see things like that.

Yes, I would encourage the kids, but would have been grossed out myself. Nice photo journaling.

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos. Sugar Bear is very brave to hold that little snake in her hand. I admire her curiosity and love for animals. I love the rose on her arm. It's cute how Daisy became very interested too.

Fantastic and high five for letting her explore that harmless snake.
I am all for the children going on and exploring nature!
How many times have I gone out fishing and seen the children scream at touching fish or the worms on the hook... it's so very very sad. These children were already ages 8 to 12 years old...
Some kids these days are not building the tree houses or digging a hole to China in their backyard, or catching frogs down by the creeks as we did when we were younger... the malls are packed with these young ones and cell phones, and laptops are now their best friends... very sad.
Wonderful post and again, I tip my hat of to you, my friend... good job!

Amazing pictures!

I try to encourage my daughter's fearlessness, even when I don't share it!

Great pictures Corey. I love that Sugar was so interested in that snake. I also love that you aren't afraid to let her do it!

Fantastic photos and I totally applaud you for teaching your little one the joys of nature. I've always done the same with my girls. Perhaps a little too much so now that I think about it. We currently have a tarantula and a toad living in our house among other pets.

Awesome pics as usual and nice tat on Sugar Bear :)

Corey: I think you should also make her understand that some of these little guys can be dangerous and she could be hurt. They were great photos.

What an awesome photo essay!

What beautiful photos and a lovely story to go along with them! I think that you did the right thing in letting her play with the little guy. I would only make sure that she understands that not all snakes are safe and that some can be dangerous and hurt her! I think that it's so important for kids to have the experience of being around animals and reptiles if possible though. What great lessons and examples you are teaching her! What a great post! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Well, she's not the typical little girl when it comes to liking snakes!

Great photo story! The snake looks so much cuter in perspective. In the pics last week on the rocks, I thought it was much larger. This tiny little snake is actually a little cute... well, maybe that's going a little far :)

I think it's great to encourage exploration of the outdoors, or any kind of cultural thing for that matter.

I love how much she is enjoying the snake!

Remind me, when we meet, to tell Sugar Bear the story of our neighbour and the cobra!!

This is a wonderful series of photos. I try to not pass on my own irrational fears to my children, with some degree of success. We are ALL getting better about spiders!

oh girl! ....first..loving the shots with the rose-tatooed arm and a snake!
If my child isn't afraid, then I am putting on the faker-oo smile that I am not shocked as well!!

If I had kids - which will never happen - I'd encourage them to play with snakes but I'd make sure they didn't hurt them. I ran over a snake once when I was little with my bicycle...repeated. Thinking back on it now it makes me feel bad. By the way, when did SB get that ink done on her arm? I didn't realize she was into tats already. ;) -Heather

I did teach my three daughters to not be afraid of snakes. I think it's wonderful that you are teaching her at a young age. There isn't a better time.

I love all the photos on your blog. The baby photos are great! The story and photos about Michelle and her mother are wonderful.

Being a reptile lover (frogs and lizards more than snakes tho I love me a pretty green garter snake) our Granddaughter thinks the world of them too and begged me to "ketch frwog" from the time she could talk...these are wonderful pictures and the little guy does seem to be enjoying being held by a Princess!

I have to admit, I probably would not have encouraged her to handle Mr Snake. Not that it would have been an issue, as my girl is an even bigger baby than I am when it comes to such things! She doesn't like any insects or reptiles, although I am trying to convince her otherwise with some of the harmless variety. At any rate, this is a wonderful series of Sugar and her new little friend!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post! Her innocence and curiosity is fantastic, and you are fantastic for allowing that to grow so she learns and appreciates the world around her.

Hi Corey!
Catching up (yet again)... :)

What a sweet post - I love how you walk us through what you told and showed Sugar and her reaction to the little snake.

I really try not to let my own dislikes of animals and bugs (spiders - yuck!) come out in front of my girls - then again, we don't have a whole lot of 'nature' here to explore. I realized the other day that I grew up playing in the woods around my house - but I don't think my girls have ever been in 'the woods'. I'll have to remedy that. :)
