I can take photos. Yes I can.
I can take good photos. Yes I can.
I can take fabulous photos. Yes I can.
I can also take some pretty lame snapshots. YES I CAN!
I don't know EXACTLY what it is about major holidays, but I simply can not take good pictures on that day. I just can't. Everything is stacked against me, and no matter what, I just know that I will get a few handfuls of snapshots that will certainly document the day, but won't please me an any way, shape, or form. I've accepted it, and don't even let it bother me anymore.
So....without further explanation...here is a wrap up of Christmas Eve, and Christmas day in the Living and Loving Household, brought to you in mediocre photos.
On Christmas Eve, we hosted The Hubby's parents at our house. We had a lovely day of FOOD, and more FOOD. Sugar was the only child, and enjoyed lots of attention. In the afternoon, she spent some time on the computer "tracking santa".
And playing some Christmas games.
Because The Hubby is totally immature he teased Sugar Bear for a week that his presents were BIGGER than hers. We had the last laugh when his were dumb things like a large cooler for camping. Amazingly enough, it didn't bother Sugar Bear one bit that he had the big presents. I was surprised.
There was much joy when it was finally time to open presents. The first was a fun game from her grandparents. We love it.
By far one of her favorites of the day was an umbrella. She had been wanting one "just like mommy's!" with the wooden handle and animals on it.
Yes....good times.....awful photos.
oh...but I can make a really yummy salad.
YES I CAN!
After the Grandparents left, it was time to prepare for bed, and make sure Santa was set for goodies. Sugar was not only tired...later we'd find out...she wasn't feeling so great. She did have the mindset to make sure we included something healthy for Santa, as she was worried about his nutritional intake of just cookies all night.
oh and it is always fun to pretend to eat Santa's cookies.

Soon she was tucked in bed, and sound asleep. Until 2:37 am, and I heard, "MAMA!!!!!......blech....!" oh dear....Sugar was puking. Seriously...this girl is never sick. I was so shocked and dismayed. I got her and her bed all cleaned up. Climbed in bed with her and spent the rest of the night fretting about it. I knew I had to cancel our trip to my parent's house in the morning. I am not the type of person to bring sick....or possibly sick child to someone else's house. However, I knew so many would be disappointed...especially Sugar Bear.
The good news...she didn't puke again....but she was out of sorts. Tired, and had no appetite for several days after. I'm not sure what it was, but it was a bit of a downer. We did make the best of it, and stayed home, and played with our new toys. Here is what she woke up to. The three wrapped gifts were some from her dad and I, and the other three were from Santa.
She had asked Santa in person, for a puzzle, and the magnetic mosaic board had been something she included in her Letter to Santa.
So that is it....all the photos I took. Seriously....don't most people take MORE pictures on holidays than any other time of year? I have MORE photos of Sugar Bear picking lint from between her toes than I do of Christmas. Seriously? What gives?
19 Live It or Love It:
LOL I'm cracking up at the husband being more immature than the four year old! So true in my house too.. sigh. Silly girl... aren't some of your most favorite pictures of your childhood just regular old snapshots?? Because they take you back.. not because of their quality. When Sugar looks at these she won't think "Wow mom was really sucky that day" She is going to remember what a wonderful time her mom made Christmas for her. :)
Wow, sounds like we had just about the same Christmas Eve - Becca woke up right at 2:30 am throwing up too. Thankfully nobody else has gotten sick, so I have no idea what was going on with her.
I never even try to take decent photos on holidays either - yours are really good though! I have a hard time in the winter anyway since I have no idea how to deal with the flash on my good camera.
I feel the same way about holiday pictures! So much pressure to enjoy the moment as well as document it. Plus having to work with all sorts of less than ideal lighting. I am embarassed to call myself a photographer and then post my lame snapshots, but at the same time I have vowed not to let this stop me from documenting our activities. In the end these are usually the pics my girls love to look at because they capture a memory.
I'm bad at taking pics during the holidays as well, but I have to say, I think yours turned out better than mine :) And I certainly hope Sugar Bear got better so quickly!
You did way better than me! I have about 3 photos of Christmas festivities total. And they are way worse than yours. I NEVER take pics of the big events. Sigh.
Sugar got some really cool stuff- I like that magnetic mosaic thing. What a bummer for SB to get sick just in time for Christmas, tho!
I thought I was the only one who did this! I can take hundreds of random pics of the kids on random days but when it's an event like Christmas or a party I don't take many at all. And the ones I take are CRUMMY.
I disagree with one thing though...your snapshots are great!! :)
I don't think that's a bad thing. I do the same actually.
You need to spend the time enjoying the experience with your child, not worrying about the camera angles etc
YOU COULD NEVER TAKE A BAD PHOTO EVEN IF YOU TRIED MY FRIEND!!!!
I felt as if I was in your home with each and every picture, they are so alive and so real...It was good to be there for those few moments, seeing Sugars joy on her face..
This little girl of your's is going to grow up to be the most together put kid...
she is amazing you are an amazing mother...
Oh your pics are great! No need to appologize at all!
You photo's are stunning! Sorry SB was sick :( but I am glad she is better and that she could find a smile for the camera! What interesting pressies she got - Santa's very clever to remember all these things!
What a sweet mom to crawl in bed with her sick child. I think I quit doing that after child number two. Or was it three? Lord knows I don't lay next to a sick kid now 'cause I can't get sick with so many to care for! :) I'm glad she didn't get really bad and was still able to enjoy Christmas.
Sick kid anytime is a bummer sick kid on Christmas major bummer! Looks like she was happy with her gifts.
I am totally with you. I can take pictures, really I can, but as soon as Christmas in particular comes along, suddenly nothing looks right. I've pretty much given up with Christmas morning and let someone else do the photographing duty. ;)
You know, I'm the same way. I hardly have any pictures of the big events and tons of the every day stuff. I'm just too busy participating to take the pictures. I think it's fine though. It's better to have taken part in it than captured it behind the lens. :) And I think your pictures are great. Love Sugar Bear's new umbrella!
What are you talking about, your pictures are wonderful!
It is funny how the photos from chaotic Christmas morning don't turn out as well as other times.
But unlike you I took 500 pics between all the parties and Grandparents that we went to. And there's not a good one in the bunch.
If you'd like to stop by my blog I'm at Cake Crumbs.
I know EXACTLY what you mean (although I think these may only be mediocre in your world -- there are some very good pictures here), I can't seem to pull it together for the big occasions -- I'm much better at capturing the mundanity of life.
I can sooo relate. My "special occasion" photos all suck. I think I rely more on video during those moments.
I also feel like you can't truly be in the moment when you are the photographer. I have to make myself leave my camera behind sometimes just so I don't hide behind the lens so much and can truly play and interact with people.
I love your Christmas pictures even if they aren't your most favorite shots : ). She is such a little doll. That salad looks yummy! I am so sorry that she couldn't be with other kids at Christmas! I am sure she was dissappointed. She did get some GREAT things though! LOVE that mosaic thing a majig : )
Moms are expected to be doing 57 things at once on Christmas; how can we take spectacular pictures, too? And, yet, somehow you managed. I think that the pictures are adorable!
