Photostory Friday~ The Not so Perfectly Picky Eater

Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

You may not know that I am a picky eater.  I USED to be an extremely picky eater, but I have gotten better as an adult.  I blame my initial picky eating habits on my  parents.  Yes...I did just say that.  And YES, it is coming back to bite me in the arse (Sugar is a bit of a picky eater, and part of it is my fault).

As I was say, my parents ruined me.  I know...I know...but they did.  They didn't feed me the things they didn't like, so not only did I have my own natural aversions, I had theirs through simply not being exposed.  Here are a few of the more common things NEVER fed to me in my childhood home:

Mayonnaise
mustard
salad dressing
sour cream
onions (of any kind)
peppers (of any kind)
tomatoes

That is a small list, but pretty significant.  Growing up with a dislike for those things was tough.  Try going to your friends house and eating a meal prepared with none of those things.  I gagged down more meals than I care to remember.

When I went to college, I worked hard at acclimating myself to things cooked with onions or peppers, and I proud to say I can safely tolerate both.  I am currently working on tomatoes.  I eat them cooked, but not raw.  As for the others...I figure they are high in fat.  I do not need to start liking them.

There are plenty of other foods I do not like....or more accurately, I do not try them, so who really knows.  This is something I really need to remedy.  For instance, for YEARS......like all my life, I have not even tried something that had Feta cheese on it, because I SWORE I had it once and didn't like it.  Well, the other day, my boss made us this pretty salad, and I decided to give it a chance (minus the raw tomato), and was shocked to find out that I liked Feta.

I think....I was confusing it with Bleu Cheese, which I KNOW for sure I do not like.  EWWWWWW

Anyhow, I swore I would do my best to give Sugar a better opportunity to eat a variety of foods, but man it is really hard to prepare and serve a child something I wouldn't eat.  It isn't that I CAN'T do it....I just don't think to do it.

This photo serves as my reminder.  Life is too short to only eat what you know.....you gotta keep trying new things.

Ok.. wait.. your parents didn't feed you tomatoes???? They have a huge garden every year!! They must grow tomatoes.. right??!!
Sorry that little fact just totally blows me away.. LOL.
Bug is such a picky eater, but slowly he is trying new things. I love the thought of making them things that we don't necessarily like. I never really thought of that!

My parents are not big veggie fans and NEVER exposed us to them. The result is that I am not a veggie person at all. When I had my daughter I vowed that she would be exposed to ALL things and you know what? She LOVES veggies and eats just about EVERTYHING! LOL!

See we have even more in common. I am a way picky eater. (How do picky eaters get fat? Hmmm). Oh, and God forbid anything on the plate touches each other. Ewww! So what has happened? I have raised five picky eaters and it is a pain-in-the-butt. And they are rude. They won't choke a meal down at someone's house. They'll just say they don't like it, and then stave. Nice, huh? I wish I had it to do all over again. In fact, I wish I had a lot of things to do over again. Now that I have sassy teenagers I'm finding out all the things I should have done differently.

When I was pregnant with my first i CRAVED tomatoes. Ate at least three big ones a day. Which is why I am convinced he likes them so much. Honestly, I feel very lucky that my kids are such good veggie eaters.

As for your pic...at 4:16 AM, that salad looks so SO good!! :)

I love raw tomatoes! I love onions! I wish I didn't love onions though...onion breath is the worst!

Mustard...eh....not so much. But, I didn't think mustard was high in fat, I thought it was one of the better condiments out there.

And I'm not a huge fan of peppers either, I can tolerate some green peppers every once and awhile but no red peppers or yellow peppers.

But, my hubby abhors tomatoes! Hates them, gags when one inadvertantly ends up in his mouth.

Oh no Corey...I think I feel rift forming in our relationship! LOL Sour Cream is my FAVOURITE. FOOD. EVER. Yes - it is a food, not a condiment. And I couldn't survive long without tomatoes, onions, peppers, mustard or mayo. You would not do well in my house!

I'm glad that you at least recognize that you need to expose Sugar to different foods. I love seeing what Nate likes and dislikes...I'm hoping he'll learn to like some things more as he grows, but I imagine even with exposure there will be things he dislikes and that's ok.

Glad you enjoy Feta...it's a real flavour booster in lots of dishes!

That salad looks SOOOO good!

I think a lot of people are picky eaters because their parents didn't serve a variety, so I'm glad you are trying to do that with SB.

I always insisted my son try at least 2 bites of something he didn't like and he's come to like most of anything. Love it!

I was a picky eater and two of my kids are the pay backs! I can't stand coconut and only like tomatoes when I am pregnant! :)

It's hard not to pass our food aversions on to our kids, isn't it?! I will eat almost anything...except seafood. And now Nadia, will eat almost anything...except seafood! the other day when hubby had fish, and she wouldn't touch it because "mommy doesn't like it." Whoops! Nadia really eats better than almost any kid I know. but hubby is super picky, especially about dairy and vegetables! He's a meat and potatoes guy. Anyway, feta = GOOD! Blue cheese = BAD!

First, beautiful picture!

Second, Picky adults kind of drive me crazy so I am glad you are willing to try new foods. I have a good friend that grew up in the same situation as you and she is a horrible picky eater.

Suggestion with tomatoes....if you eat them raw, slice them really really thin. That is how I got my girls to start liking them. Those ones on the salad you were given looked like they probably didn't have any taste to them. :)

We really strive to offer the kids a wide variety of things.

You should try my favorite pasta ...the one with penne, spinach and FETA...I know I have the recipe on my blog, but I can send it if you are interested. It is an awesome QUICK pasta salad with a balsamic vinaigrette.

Yummy! Greek Salads are just the BEST, aren't they?

Oh my gosh! I could have written this.

I didn't eat Chinese food until I was 21, because my mom told me I didn't like it. My 30 year old brother, to this day, only eats ketchup on his hamburgers, because my mom told him that that was how he liked them.

Bravo for branching out -- and don't bother with the Bleu Cheese (unless you like licking stinky feet!)

I'm not fussy, probably because I went to boarding school!

There isn't a whole lot of things I won't eat, I like just about anything.
I will not eat red meats because of health issues but otherwise the only other thing is olives and pears, otherwise I will eat anything else you put in front of me!
I love and will eat tomatoes as if they were apples, I can eat these quite generously each day!

Oh wow.... I can't believe that you never tried those things as a kid!!! Woah! I'm so glad that Baby Blue will eat just about anything! haha.

Oh and you won the sample size packet in last weeks giveaway!!
