What's In A Name?

A long, long time ago, my parents spent a great deal of time coming up with the perfect name for their second child....ME. The thing I love about them, is that they are super efficient. They did not know the sex gender of the baby they were expecting, so they figured if they picked a name that could fit either gender, it would save them a lot of trouble. Thus....COREY was chosen. Whether I popped out entered this world a boy or a girl....Corey I would be. Now isn't THAT brilliant? I wish I could say it was novel, but they had done it 3 years earlier when pregnant with my arch nemesis brother Casey.

So Corey it is, and I have to admit, that I have never been in like, love, or loathing with my name. I would classify my feelings as indifferent. I had friends through my life who HATED their names, and constantly dreamed of what they should have been named. I felt bad for them. I can't imagine not feeling at all connected to the name given me. Even though I haven't had strong feelings for my name, I have very much felt bonded to it, and really can't imagine being called anything else.

Growing up, I had many occasion to ponder my name. I am well aware that not many girls are named Corey....especially that particular spelling. I have met several spelled, Cory, Corrie, Kori, Korrie, and even one Corree. I have never met an other girl Corey. However, when I was pregnant, and registering for the baby gift registry at Target, there was another pregnant Corey " "....with my Last Name and EVERYTHING! This FLOORED me. My last name is not very common. So put that together with another girl named Corey...I felt....somehow.....creeped out. Is that strange? I felt like someone out there had my life. Some pregnant lady out there had my name....like she stole it or something. Maybe it was the hormones, but I felt somehow less special.

Today, while browsing the Net, I ran across this site where you type in your name and it will tell how many people in the US share that name. I was shocked with the results:

HowManyOfMe.com
LogoThere are
4
people with my name
in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?

That is FOUR people that share my first AND last name. Freaky!!!! At least for me it is. Here are a few other statistics:

-There are 156,018 people in the U.S. with the first name Corey.

-Statistically the 387th most popular first name.

-95.15 percent of people with the first name Corey are male.

Do you care to play along and let me know what your results are? What do you feel about your name? How does it make you feel that others have your name? Am I the only one, that wonders what those people are like? Does sharing a name somehow connect us in a way that is too complex to understand? What do you think?

I used my maiden name for the last name and found that 419 people share both my last and first name. (they are pretty common). I did my first name which is Theresa (I go by Terry for short) and there are 410,500 people with that name and it is 137th most popular. I have to say that I am one of those that I have never been connected to my name. I just don't like the spelling or the fact that it is spelled like a man's name...why couldn't my mom have spelled it Terri or Terrie....I can't tell you how many letters I get addressed to me as Mr. I can't stand that.

Hmm, there are 0 of me in the US - guess I don't exist! My last name is pretty uncommon though - anyone who has it is related to my husband in some way. There are 748,292 Deborahs though and when I tried with my maiden name (a pretty common one), it came up with 569 other people with that name. Freaky! :)

There are 0 people with my first and last (married) name. However there are 60 with my first and last maiden name! There are 25,751 people in the U.S. with the first name Autumn. Statistically the 1143rd most popular first name.
I am lucky, I love my name and except for a short time in the fifth grade, I have always loved it.
Frankly, it does creep me out that 60 other people have my first and last (maiden) name. My name is fairly unique and I have felt very connected to it most of my life, so sharing it is hard. Yes, silly I know. :)

I've never been all that wild about my first name. Everyone has called me by my nickname for years, so I'm actually quite startled when I'm addressed by my given name!

I am unique.
Hooray.

42 people have my first + maiden name. 3 people have my first + married name.

My first name is Megan, and I was born in 1976, then in the early '80's Megan became very popular. I don't mind though, my mom was ahead of her time with her choice.

I've always liked me name, but never loved it. It's cool though because my grandmother's name starts with M, my mother's does, mine does, and so does my daughter's. We have a generational theme going I guess.

I like Corey btw. We thought about Corrin, with Cori for short, but it would have broken the whole M thing.

That is really neat! I like my name, but I liked it a lot better with my maiden name--it "goes" really well with it--than I do with my married name.
